The People Behind the Mission: Humanitarian Work Through the Eyes of MOAS Staff

Humanitarian work is often seen only through its most visible moments: aid deliveries, emergency evacuations and frontline support. Yet behind every action, there is a dedicated team working tirelessly to make it all possible. Today, we shine a light on our incredible MOAS team based in Malta, the heart of our operations since our founding in 2014.

Different roles, one shared purpose: ensuring MOAS’ missions around the world run safely, effectively and with dignity. Our departments work in sync, united by commitment, passion and a deep belief in MOAS’ values. From Communication to Finance, every person contributes to the strength and success of our humanitarian work.

Christina, Director of Operations and Fundraising

Experienced, focused and ambitious, Christina has been part of MOAS for 11 years. As Director of Operations, she oversees missions from both logistical and financial angles, ensuring every detail supports the teams on the ground.

Her career has taken her across the world, driven by a passion that never fades. Although our headquarters are far from the frontline in Ukraine, where MOAS conducts emergency medical evacuations, Christina feels deeply connected to the mission:

“I know my work matters, even if I am far away and I am not able to see it with my own eyes. Real people are working every day to save lives, and that makes me want to support them in every way possible.”

Dejan, Finance & Admin Officer

If it involves numbers, it involves Dejan. Budgets, controls, financial planning, his precision keeps MOAS’ commitments strong and reliable. For him, finance is not just accounting; it is accountability.

“Every number represents something very real: a mission that needs to happen, a team that needs to be supported, or resources that need to reach people who need them.”

His work is essential to MOAS’ integrity, ensuring that every promise made is a promise kept.

Alina, Financial Officer

Organized, meticulous and deeply dedicated, Alina manages payments, receipts and budgets with unwavering care. She knows that behind every transaction lies something far greater: the possibility of saving a life.

“I have an amazing team with whom I work. They are passionate people who love what they are doing, so I have one more reason to love what I do as well.”

Alina is a trusted presence within our international team: someone who listens, supports and strengthens the mission every day.

Camilla, Volunteer & Project Participation Coordinator

The newest addition to MOAS, Camilla brings creativity, energy and determination to her work with volunteers and social media. Having dedicated much of her life to humanitarian action, she believes deeply in dignity, courage and hope.

Guided by clarity, honesty  and humanity, she works to make MOAS’ mission visible and understood:

MOAS protects, listens and acts, and every story we share honours the resilience of the people we serve.”

Alessia & Silvia, ESC volunteers

Our all‑rounders, Alessia and Silvia, support a wide range of activities: project management, social media and social inclusion work with migrants and refugees.

Alessia, organized and enthusiastic, leads our Bridging Cultures Through Food project, a cooking workshop sponsored by MCVS. As her ESC year comes to an end, she reflects:

“I discovered so much about myself. I learnt what working in a humanitarian NGO means and what keeps a project running from an HQ perspective.”

Silvia, sensitive and passionate, is our link to reception centres across Malta, coordinating social inclusion activities. This experience has shaped her future:

“I am grateful for this year because it brought growth, experience and awareness. Now I know what it takes to work in the humanitarian field, and I am proud to be involved in this amazing, inspiring world.”

Final Thoughts

Behind every MOAS mission, there is a team whose dedication is always essential. Their commitment, precision, creativity and compassion form the backbone of our humanitarian work, allowing us to respond swiftly, responsibly and with humanity wherever we are needed.

The stories of Christina, Dejan, Alina, Camilla, Alessia and Silvia remind us that humanitarian action is never carried out by individuals alone; it is the result of collective effort, shared values and an unwavering belief in protecting human dignity.

Their work keeps MOAS moving forward and their impact reaches far beyond the walls of our headquarters.
