As we draw ever closer to Giving Tuesday, we wanted to take a moment to consider what the day is and what it means, and how you can help us make a difference to thousands of people.
On the 3rd of December, MOAS will once again take part in Giving Tuesday, a global day of giving in the week following Thanksgiving.
Launched in the US in 2012, the day is a reaction to the consumerism of Blank Friday and Cyber Monday and gives everyone a chance to join in with a global movement and donate to important causes.
MOAS has been taking part in Giving Tuesday since 2014, and over the last four years we have benefited tremendously from the public’s generosity.
In previous years the focus of our campaigns has ranged from Search and Rescue in the Mediterranean, through which we rescued and assisted more than 40,000 people, to primary healthcare provision in Bangladesh, where we provided over 90,000 Rohingya refugees and host community members with desperately-needed medical care. We couldn’t have provided these lifesaving interventions without the generosity of everyone who donated to the MOAS cause on Giving Tuesday and throughout the festive seasons.
We’ve also had many high-profile supporters for our Giving Tuesday campaigns, from David Gilmour and Michael Fassbender to Colin Firth and many more. Each of these individuals have engaged with MOAS because they’ve believed in our mission and our message- that every life has value and that every cent we can raise to relieve suffering and mitigate loss of life is deeply impactful.
This year, 2019, MOAS has been working to launch operations in Yemen providing famine relief and medical supplies to meet the desperate need of the civilians being so dramatically affected by the crisis. With the help of donors and partners MOAS has successfully delivered a shipment containing $97,000 worth of famine relieving product, Plumpy Doz, to the Aden region in collaboration with partner Edesia. Plumply Doz is used to treat and prevent severe malnutrition in children, who are at the highest risk from the famine conditions currently raging in many parts of the country. We also facilitated the delivery of €138,000 of medical supplies and pharmaceuticals to help existing Yemeni health care facilities continue to provide life-saving care, partnering with German organisation Action Medeor.
This year we are working hard to ensure we can continue to respond to this humanitarian crisis. It costs just $20 for MOAS to provide treatment to a single malnourished child, and this Giving Tuesday, we will be calling on our supporters and donors to help us save a life by donating the cost of one treatment pack to our next shipment.

If we reach our target MOAS could provide 61,000 sachets of ready to use therapeutic food, enough to treat over 500 children over a 8 week treatment plan. This treatment is key to the survival of many of the 250,000 yemenis on the brink of starvation today.
