Frontline Unity: How Partnerships Power MOAS’ Lifesaving Work in Ukraine

What does it take to save nearly 70,000 lives in a warzone? For MOAS, it starts with strong partnerships and unstoppable teamwork. Since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, we’ve worked hand in hand with local medics, global charities, donors, and frontline volunteers to deliver emergency medical care where it’s needed most.

Our Work

MOAS has been at the forefront of delivering critical medical aid in one of the world’s most dangerous conflict zones. Our current mission focuses on emergency medical evacuations, operating a fleet of 52 ambulances staffed by 150 dedicated Ukrainian doctors, paramedics, and drivers. Every week, MOAS carries out 500-700 casualty evacuation operations, rescuing severely wounded soldiers and civilians from frontline areas and transporting them to safety. To date, MOAS has saved nearly 70,000 lives through these evacuations, providing trauma care and advanced life support under highly challenging conditions.

Coordination with Health Authorities and Humanitarian Clusters

MOAS’s work is coordinated with the Ukraine Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Defence ensuring that emergency medical responses are integrated into national health strategies.

At the beginning of the operation in 2022, MOAS operated within the Humanitarian Health Clusters, a coordination mechanism led by WHO and UN agencies to bring together NGOS and humanitarian actors. This system facilitated effective information sharing, resource allocation, and operational coordination, maximising the reach and efficiency of medical aid across Ukraine.

Mobile Medical Unit Partners

Until 2024, MOAS ran a Mobile Medical Unit (MMU), which brought primary healthcare services directly to communities cut off from traditional medical infrastructure. Throughout this initiative, the MMU treated 30.000 civilians, offering vital medical support in eastern oblasts such as Kharkiv, Donetsk, and Sumy.

The success of the MMU project was made possible through strong partnerships with local and international organizations:

  • Ronald McDonald House Charity Latvia (RMHC Latvija) generously donated the Mobile Medical Unit vehicle, which served as a mobile clinic delivering primary healthcare to isolated communities.
  • The MHP Gromadi Charitable Foundation, a Ukrainian organisation supporting social and medical initiatives across multiple regions, provided essential logistical and material support to MOAS’s operations.
  • Through donations and coordination on the ground, the Oksana Dmytriieva Charitable Foundation also contributed to sustaining the MMU and broader medical efforts.

These partners were instrumental in enabling MOAS to reach vulnerable populations and deliver lifesaving care.

Equipment Donations and Medical Supplies

MOAS’s frontline medical teams rely on vital equipment and supplies donated by generous organizations:

  • Action MEDEOR, a German humanitarian group, is currently providing pharmaceutical donations critical to sustaining MOAS’s medical operations in Ukraine.
  • Partners, including Patients.ua and Nova Ukraine, have donated advanced medical devices such as perfumers. These devices are now installed in MOAS’s intensive care ambulances, enhancing the quality of care delivered on the frontlines.
  • Logistical partners like Nova Poshta Humanitarian facilitate the delivery of medicines, medical equipment, consumables, ambulance parts, and food, ensuring that MOAS teams can maintain operational readiness across multiple frontline locations.

 Additional Partners Supporting MOAS’s Mission

Beyond direct medical support, MOAS benefits from the goodwill and practical assistance of various local authorities and organisations:

  • The Kagarlitsky City Council has shown solidarity by providing free meals to the children of MOAS employees, recognizing the sacrifices made by frontline medical personnel.
  • Numerous volunteer groups and civil society actors contribute to replenishing supplies and restoring equipment, helping MOAS maintain its critical services.

Donors Sustaining Lifesaving Operations

MOAS’s lifesaving work is made possible by the generosity of a global community of donors, including philanthropists, foundations, and individuals. Their financial contributions enable MOAS to operate its fleet of ambulances, maintain medical supplies, and support frontline teams delivering emergency care under extreme conditions.

Media Advocates Amplifying the Mission

Media coverage plays a crucial role in raising awareness about the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine and MOAS’s response. Outlets such as BBC, SkyNews, The Guardian, Kyiv Independent, Times of Malta, Lovin Malta, and many more have featured MOAS’s work, helping to mobilise international support and highlight the urgent need for continued humanitarian aid.

Final Thoughts: The Power and Urgency of Partnership

The scale and complexity of the crisis in Ukraine demand a united approach. MOAS’s experience demonstrates that collaboration – sharing resources, expertise, and logistical capacity – is critical to delivering effective and timely medical aid. Our partnerships with health authorities, charitable foundations, donors, and community organizations form the backbone of our ability to save lives daily.

Call for Support

However, despite our successes, MOAS faces a severe funding shortage. With resources dwindling and demand for emergency medical evacuations higher than ever, continued support is critical. Without additional funding, MOAS risks halting operations, which would be catastrophic for the thousands of soldiers and civilians relying on our services every day.

Together, through partnership and solidarity, we can ensure that hope and lifesaving care reach those who need it most in Ukraine’s darkest hours.
