This Giving Tuesday, as we celebrate the power of giving, we want to share stories from Ukraine that showcase the incredible resilience of people facing unimaginable challenges and the quiet, unwavering hope that sustains them.
At MOAS, hope is not abstract; it is felt in every life saved, every act of care, and every moment of human connection. Here are some of those stories:
Lives Saved Against All Odds
Lieutenant Oleksandr Voznyi, known to his comrades as Biker, knows the life-changing importance of hope. He suffered catastrophic injuries during an attack in Zaporizhzhia. Severe blood loss, multiple cardiac arrests, and injuries that should have been unsurvivable marked the beginning of his story.
But the MOAS medics Stanislav, Volodymyr, and Serhiy refused to accept the odds. Their hands never stopped working, their belief never wavered, as they performed continuous CPR while racing him to the hospital.
Oleksandr survived. “Every day I thank God that I’m alive,” Oleksandr says. “I’m so happy my children will not be orphans.”

Today, he continues his rehabilitation and has received awards for his bravery. Yet he is quick to credit the medics. “Every life saved keeps Ukraine in the war,” he says. “People fought for my life for a hundred kilometres, and that saved me. There are hundreds of others like me whose lives are saved because of their work.”
Oleksandr’s story is a powerful reminder that hope is not passive. It is carried by those willing to act, to believe, and to care even when the circumstances seem impossible.
Hope Comes in Many Forms
Sometimes, hope arrives unexpectedly. During a mission on the front line, MOAS paramedic Igor heard faint cries while returning from duty. Following the sound, the team discovered a small puppy trapped deep in a pipeline. Carefully, Igor rescued the frightened pup, and the team provided care until it was safe.
The rescue may appear minor compared to the severity of the frontlines, but it serves as a reminder that compassion and care are not solely for humans. Acts of kindness, no matter how small, spread outwards, sustaining hope even in the most difficult situations.
A Tattoo of Resilience
Before the war, Mykyta worked in emergency medical services. When the conflict escalated, his role changed. Emergencies became constant, pressure was relentless, yet his sense of purpose only grew. In April 2024, Mykyta officially joined MOAS as a medic.
One mission stands out. A young soldier, critically injured, had a tattoo that read “Free Youth.” It could have been a sombre reminder of what had been lost, but to Mykyta, it became a symbol of resilience.
“He could have been studying, building a career, making plans for the future. But he chose to defend his country,” Mykyta reflects. “That tattoo reminded me of the strength, determination, and hope that still exist. It’s a symbol that even in adversity, people keep fighting.”
Each mission is demanding, yet moments like these remind him why he is there.
Every Life a Story of Hope
These are some stories of hope from Ukraine. But every MOAS team, ambulance, and medic shares the same mission: to save lives. And every life saved is a story of hope.
The critically injured Ukrainian defenders they care for are not just patients, they are all individuals with their own stories and thanks to MOAS, they can keep writing them.
Hope also persists within the MOAS teams themselves. Working in dangerous, emotionally intense conditions, they rely on each other. They support, trust, and uplift one another. For them, every successful evacuation, every recovery, and every small act of care is a reminder that human connection and compassion can thrive even in the harshest circumstances.

Be Part of the Story this Giving Tuesday
On Giving Tuesday (2 December), your support will enable MOAS to continue sharing these stories of hope. From frontline medics saving lives to small acts of kindness like rescuing a trapped puppy, each contribution drives the mission. It guarantees that every critically injured Ukrainian defender has a chance at survival.
Because at MOAS, every life is invaluable. Every story matters. But we are currently experiencing funding shortages and rely on your support to keep going. With your help, more stories of courage, care, and hope will continue to unfold across Ukraine.
