Breaking Barriers: Why Social Justice Matters More Than Ever

Social justice is a fundamental principle for ensuring the dignity of all individuals. Increasingly, there is recognition that it should be at the heart of national and international policies. This idea has gained traction, as prioritising social justice fosters greater cohesion within societies and economies.

Yet, despite growing awareness, systemic injustices continue to undermine progress. Rising inequality, job insecurity, and the erosion of social protections, worsened by global crises, pose serious threats to collective well-being. To build a more just and equitable future, it is essential to reinforce policies and institutions that uphold fairness, protect rights, and create opportunities for all.

The Significance of World Day of Social Justice

Observed annually on February 20, the World Day of Social Justice was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007 to reaffirm the global commitment to create a fairer and more inclusive society. This day serves as a reminder of the urgent need to tackle poverty, unemployment, and social exclusion, ensuring that no one is left behind.

At its core, social justice is about upholding fundamental human rights and fostering equitable access to opportunities. It calls for economic systems rooted in justice, transparency, accountability, and inclusion, which would reinforce democracy and meaningful participation. However, persistent inequalities, exacerbated by conflict, displacement, and economic instability, continue to threaten progress.

The World Day of Social Justice also highlights the need for strengthened international efforts to eradicate poverty, promote decent work and full employment, advance gender equality, and secure access to social protections for all. By recognising these challenges, the global community can work toward a more just, sustainable, and resilient future.

Growing Polarisation and Inequality

Societies are becoming more divided and unequal, with widening gaps in wealth, opportunity, and rights. The growing polarisation of communities intensifies social tensions, making it increasingly difficult to achieve justice and cohesion. This underscores the urgent need to address these disparities, which are essential for building a fair and inclusive future. Making social justice the cornerstone of policies is not just important—it is an immediate call to action for the international community, particularly in the humanitarian field.

For humanitarian organizations, the foundation of social justice is crucial to effectively addressing global challenges. Only through a commitment to justice can we ensure that humanitarian aid reaches those who need it most, fostering sustainable solutions and supporting long-term equity.

MOAS’s Work to Safeguard Social Justice

MOAS fully embodies the principles of social justice through its unwavering commitment to humanitarian action across various crises.

Our Commitment

In its fight against poverty, food insecurity, and inequality, we have been dedicated since 2019 to sending nutritional and medical aid to Yemen, Somalia, and Sudan – countries whose population, including many children, is severely affected by the combination of civil conflicts and extreme-weather phenomena.

In addition, from day one of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, MOAS is present on the frontline. Our mission is to safeguard human rights, which include the right to receive health care – of soldiers and civilians living in a territory where most of the medical facilities are destroyed by bombs.

MOAS Impact in Malta

In Malta, MOAS is committed to protecting refugees’ rights and dignity against social exclusion. This is why, in 2024, we inaugurated an Information and Learning Centre in the Awas-run Hal Far Open Centre (HOC) where migrants can access resources, including PCs and wi-fi connection, for educational purposes and community engagement.

Besides supporting the most vulnerable, MOAS approach focuses much on participation. The organization actively involves local communities, stakeholders, volunteers, and civil society in its initiatives, recognizing that change cannot occur without the engagement and collaboration of all.

MOAS considers it extremely important to listen to different ideas to find the best operating strategies. Because of this, our team is diverse and international, which is a significant strength for the outcome of our missions.

Final Thoughts

The World Day of Social Justice requires us to slow down and find some time to ask ourselves what we, in our own small way, can do to contribute to a more just, inclusive and sustainable world. We believe fostering collaboration, dialogue, constructive debates, and good-quality information about global humanitarian issues is a good start to turn these words into reality.
