SOUTH EAST ASIA - ANDAMAN SEA
MOAS Operations 2016
Around 256,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) live in refugee camps in western Burma and southern Bangladesh (Rakhine and Cox’s Bazar). 95 % of them are Rohingya- Muslim who are not recognized as citizens by the government and are oppressed by the Buddhist majority. Many of them flee the country towards Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia in search for a better life. Smugglers, who promise to take them to any Southern port, abandon them en masse in different points of the Andaman Sea. Only in May 2015, 70 people are estimated to have died at sea on abandoned ships (UNHCR, Aug. 2015).
