{"id":44817,"date":"2016-03-15T16:02:35","date_gmt":"2016-03-15T16:02:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/just2093.temp.domains\/~tqmoaseu\/queen-maxima-and-the-people-of-the-netherlands-honour-moas-at-the-geuzen-medal-award\/"},"modified":"2022-07-09T17:15:12","modified_gmt":"2022-07-09T17:15:12","slug":"queen-maxima-and-the-people-of-the-netherlands-honour-moas-at-the-geuzen-medal-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.moas.eu\/de\/queen-maxima-and-the-people-of-the-netherlands-honour-moas-at-the-geuzen-medal-award\/","title":{"rendered":"QUEEN MAXIMA AND THE PEOPLE OF THE NETHERLANDS HONOUR MOAS AT THE GEUZEN MEDAL AWARD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On March 14, MOAS received the Geuzen Medal for 2016 at a ceremony in the Grote Kerk (Great Church) of Vlaardingen <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ad.nl\/ad\/nl\/1038\/Rotterdam\/article\/detail\/4262962\/2016\/03\/14\/Maxima-bij-uitreiking-dertigste-Geuzenpenning.dhtml\">in the presence of Her Majesty the Queen M\u00e1xima<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Geuzen Medal is awarded as a tribute to people and organisations working for human rights and who oppose dictatorship, discrimination and racism.<\/p>\n<p>Last January, the Geuzenpenning Foundation announced that <a href=\"\/?p=8663\">MOAS has been awarded the Geuzen Medal for 2016<\/a> for its work in searching for boats carrying refugees and rescuing those in peril.<\/p>\n<p>Co-founder of MOAS, MOAS Representative accepted the medal on behalf of the MOAS team as well as her husband Christopher Catrambone, who is currently in Southeast Asia launching another MOAS mission.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11289\" src=\"https:\/\/www.moas.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/IMG_4084-1.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_4084\" width=\"1024\" height=\"691\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are honoured to have received the Geuzen Medal and join a long list of individuals and institutions who have in some special way devoted themselves to fighting for democracy and against dictatorship, discrimination and racism, keeping alive the ideals and memory of the Geuzen resistance group\u201d said Ms Catrambone.<\/p>\n<p>The search and rescue organisation MOAS was established in 2013 by Christopher and MOAS Representative and has saved more than 13,000 men, women and children to date.<\/p>\n<p>Although MOAS is not the only organisation to assist refugees at sea, the Geuzenpenning Foundation noted that it was the first private rescue service organisation.<\/p>\n<p>The medal was presented to MOAS by Eduard Nazarski, director of Amnesty International Netherland. \u2018In Lampedusa and Sicily, rescued refugees described the horrors they had experienced at sea. As more and more people drowned in their attempt to reach Europe, MOAS launched its own rescue operations. MOAS has saved thousands of people from drowning and provided an inspiring example to hesitant governments\u2019, Mr Nazarski said<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11290\" src=\"https:\/\/www.moas.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/IMG_4083.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_4083\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is moments like today that we have the chance to reflect on what we have done, as individuals, as a team, as a global network of donors and supporters who have made everything possible. Thanks also to this recognition MOAS will continue to work hard to keep the flame of hope alive for all those desperate children, mothers and fathers risking their lives at sea\u201d, said Ms Catrambone in her acceptance speech.<\/p>\n<p>The Geuzen Medal is an initiative of the Geuzenpenning Foundation. This organisation was established by the former Dutch resistance fighters who were active in World War II. The Geuzen Medal is intended to honour and support today\u2019s freedom fighters and human rights activists.
