Below, one of our team shares a personal insight into his memories and reflections on the experience of those we save.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Many among the people we rescue in the Central Mediterranean admit that they had never seen the sea before taking this deadly journey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImagine you\u2019ve never seen the sea\u201d is what a friend of mine from Togo, Nestor, once said to me when I asked him how he felt to see snow fall for the first time in his life.<\/p>\n<p>He was 26 at that time, he had come to Europe to study at university, and when the first snow came that winter, he spent the whole day outside, in the cold, playing with it and watching it fall.<\/p>\n<p>I remember how happy he looked: he was thrilled. This\u00a0beautiful natural phenomenon, which he knew existed but had never directly experienced before, was finally unfolding in front of him. I mocked his reaction, and that\u2019s when\u00a0he replied: \u201cimagine you had never seen the sea, what would your reaction be when, for the first time in your life, you got to a beach and looked at the horizon?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moas.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/MW_RESPONDER_7-22-16_1068_edit.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16912\" src=\"https:\/\/www.moas.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/MW_RESPONDER_7-22-16_1068_edit.jpg\" alt=\"\u00a9 Mathieu Willcocks\/MOAS.eu 2016, all rights reserved.\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I had grown up around the sea and so it was an integrated part of my frame of reference, so I tried to think about something equally impressive, big and fascinating. I thought of\u00a0the desert, and tried to imagine my reaction if\u00a0I ever found myself\u00a0standing before that huge expanse\u00a0of sand for the first time. I felt the sudden urge\u00a0to actually go to see the desert and to venture into it, just to see what my reaction would be.<\/p>\n<p>Now some years have gone by, and I haven\u2019t made it to see the desert yet, even though I\u2019m still curious as to what\u00a0my reaction would be to see it for the first time. This\u00a0story comes to my mind every time someone among those we rescue, finally safe and sound on board one of the MOAS ships, lets go of\u00a0all the fear, and tells us, almost in tears: \u201cthis is actually the first time I&#8217;ve seen the\u00a0sea in my life\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moas.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/MW_RESPONDER_7-11-16_0072_edit.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16913\" src=\"https:\/\/www.moas.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/MW_RESPONDER_7-11-16_0072_edit.jpg\" alt=\"\u00a9 Mathieu Willcocks\/MOAS.eu 2016, all rights reserved.\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Suddenly then, anxiety gives way\u00a0to a smile, and to a\u00a0spontaneous admiration for such a beautiful, yet at times\u00a0terrible, natural phenomenon.<\/p>\n<p>These men, women and children, that desperately try to cross the sea on overcrowded dinghies every day, are ready to bear any burden to get what they want. They flee conflict, pain and poverty from their countries, hoping for a better future; and to get it, they need to cross that immense stretch of water they\u2019ve surely heard about, but may have\u00a0never seen before.<\/p>\n<p>I can only imagine how it would\u00a0be, to see this huge mass of water for the first time, knowing\u00a0that\u00a0you are about\u00a0to cross it in desperate conditions. I try to put myself in their shoes, to imagine seeing the desert for the first time, knowing I have to cross it. The\u00a0more I try to picture\u00a0myself in this situation, the more I realise the\u00a0fear that must precede the journey, and the reckless determination that it must take to make\u00a0them go through with\u00a0it.<\/p>\n<p>I can only imagine.<\/p>\n<p><em>If you have a question for our team, simply <strong>#AskMOAS<\/strong> on social media.
