So often, the MOAS crews have to ask the people we rescue difficult and sometimes deeply personal questions about what has prompted their journey, and what they have experienced along the way. This month, we took the opportunity to ask some of the people on board the Phoenix about the things that everyone enjoys; about their favourite food, music, singers, hobbies. Some of the answers took even us by surprise<\/p>\n

Raymond, Nigeria<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019m now talking to Raymond. How old are you?<\/em> 19, I\u2019m from Anambra State.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your favourite food?<\/em> I eat Jollof rice. With meat or fish?<\/em> Meat or fish, any one is OK, especially meat.<\/p>\n

And what\u2019s your favourite music? I like listening to relaxing music, like Enya, really calm relaxation music because I like to meditate and think a lot. So instrumental music? <\/em>Yes. Nigerian music has too many sounds! When I\u2019m listening to music I like reading books: adventure, Christian and some motivational books.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your favourite hobby?<\/em> Soccer, that\u2019s my hobby and that\u2019s what I do. So what\u2019s your position, midfield, striker<\/em>? I just graduated from my school team, I was just about to get in the local club in my area before the problems came, and the threat came, and my mum decided I should travel. Who\u2019s your favourite football player? <\/em>Cristiano Ronaldo, but I\u2019m a defender! I support Real Madrid as well, I\u2019m Spanish.<\/em> Oh that\u2019s great! Will you watch the final?<\/em> I\u2019d love to.<\/p>\n

John, Nigeria<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019m now talking to John, who\u2019s 31. What\u2019s your favourite food?<\/em><\/p>\n

I like eating rice you know! I eat rice like no-one else can eat it, because my grandma all of her life, you know, eats rice every morning, so we used to go through that process to learn how to eat rice: rice every morning and every evening a bit, with stew and chicken, and sometimes with yam sauce.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your favourite music?<\/em> I like Nigerian music, and some Christian music.<\/p>\n

And your hobby?<\/em> I like playing ping-pong and basketball, before now I played basketball a lot.<\/p>\n

Samba, Gambia<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019m talking to Samba from Gambia, and he\u2019s 18. What\u2019s your favourite food?<\/em> Benachin, which is rice, fish and oil, and at the same time potato and tomato, and we put there eggs. That sounds delicious!<\/em> Yes, it\u2019s so delicious.<\/p>\n

And your favourite music?<\/em> My favourite music is slow jam. Can you dance to this music?<\/em> No, I can\u2019t dance, but I\u2019m trying. It\u2019s music from America. And do you have a favourite singer?<\/em> My favourite singer is Celine Dion. Ah, Celine Dion!<\/em> Yes, I like the music very well.<\/p>\n

And what\u2019s your hobby? <\/em>I like sport, volleyball. Are you good?<\/em> I\u2019m trying! You play at the beach?<\/em> Yes, at the beachside.<\/p>\n

Sonny, Nigeria<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019m now with Sonny, who\u2019s 32. What\u2019s your favourite food Sonny?<\/em> I must confess it\u2019s swolu, and when I say swolu I mean like semolina, you know? You know fufu? Have you heard of fufu? It\u2019s a kind of swolu extracted from cassava.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your favourite music?<\/em> I love hip-hop, and I also love gospel.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your favourite hobby?<\/em> I love listening to music, that\u2019s my hobby. Do you like dancing too?<\/em> No, I\u2019m not good at dancing!<\/p>\n

Mousa, Gambia<\/strong><\/p>\n

Here we have Mousa, who\u2019s 18.<\/em> What\u2019s your favourite food? It\u2019s rice. What\u2019s your favourite music? <\/em>Jamaican music, reggae music, I really like Bob Marley.<\/p>\n

And what\u2019s your hobby?<\/em> I play football. You\u2019re a defender?<\/em> Yes, a defender<\/p>\n

Serifa, Gambia<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019m talking to Serifa, who\u2019s 24.<\/em><\/p>\n

What\u2019s your favourite food?<\/em> Rice! With meat and fish, rice with stew, and sometimes gallou stew.<\/p>\n

And what\u2019s your favourite music?<\/em> Sometimes I listen to music a lot, because when I feel sad or stressed and I listen to music there is no problem on me. That\u2019s great, music helps you feel better? <\/em>Music gives me hope, it makes me feel OK.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your hobby? What do you do in your free time? <\/em>Me, I always liked work. Since my childhood time, I have not watched football: I\u2019m from a poor family, so only work I know, only work and sleep. Some of them they like music and dancing, some like football. Me, my game is work.<\/p>\n
